PROTEST THE CLOSING OF AVALON AND AXIS

As of yesterday, mayor menino has approved the closing of avalon and axis nightclubs in order to merge them and make a palladium type thing and restaurants.

im organizing a protest against this seeing as it will destroy much of the music scene here in boston, for bands that arent really big acts.

the protest will be Friday June 22nd from noon to 5 pm at city hall plaza

be there.

These clubs get rebuilt, renovated, and renamed every few years. Once upon a time they were Metro and Spit, and before that, Boston-Boston, and before that, I forget what.

actually, these structures have been around since the 1890s. they havent ever torn them down. changed names and reonovated the inside, sure, but i wouldnt say rebuilt.

now i'm not saying anyone should protest it - it's not going to make a lick of difference because they are doing what they need to do to make money. but they are demolishing buildings and removing 2 or 3 smaller clubs (and a 3rd big one) to make way for a single huge one.

but it's not like those 2 or 3 small clubs they're removing will really hurt any local artist. they dont get much time there anyway.

1890s? I had no idea. That makes them older than the Opera House, Majestic, Wang, Somerville, Coolidge, and almost every other theatre building that we treasure. (The Orpheum goes back to the 1850s.) Heck, that's even older than Fenway Park across the street.

Axis and Avalon have already done enough to destroy the music scene here in Boston, so I can't imagine this would be any worse... If i don't have to get rushed out of a venue at 10:30pm after the artists were rushed onto and off of the stage so Avalon can bring in their wanker dance night I'll consider it a blessing...

that is very true. I've taken in a show or 20 at the Avalon in my time, and I really actually liked the room. it was a decent room to see a show in.

I even liked the early times that they'd have shows. rushing shows, not allowing the band to do encores if they were "running late" (likely the Avalon staff's fault), and shoving people our so they could do their "real" business of having a bunch of fuckbags do E and grind on each other... those things I didn't like.

however, I haven't gone to a show there in about 3 years, and it's not like there aren't other reasonably similarly sized clubs for bands to play at.

"Imagine how many more copies would have been sold if there were an audio/video outlet that still FOCUSED on this kind of music.

We can all hope that they shut down these clubs for good. Who needs a bunch of drunk stupid people hanging around anyway.

I don't go there for clubbing or the like but both are really good venues to see bands at. I would be sad to see them go.

the thing is, opening a bigger venue willl be great for the music scene, but tearing down these smaller venues will be bad for it aswell.
there will be more oppourtunity for bigger bands to play, but spaces for rising acts will be limited to 18+ or 21+ venues, which really sucks for the boston youth. aka me.

Okay, so I went to the protest, and there was a carnival there instead of a protest. What's up with that?
